5 Minute Interview with Billy Withers

How and why did you get involved with Irvine Beat FM? : I appeared at the Open Day for Irvine Beat FM after hearing about it through a friend and thought “Why the heck not?” I ended up popping down, chatted away to some lovely people involved in the station and a wee while and training later I turned up doing my little show to kick the weekend off.

What are your favourite types of music? : I am a rock and metal man to heart, if I’m honest, but I listen to most stuff. I try and stay away from songs that have less words than a burnt dictionary, but if the tune is decent I’ll at least try and listen to it. Soul, Classical, some Mainstream and Blues are my major players outside of the shred stuff.

Name your favourite artist(s) : Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Metallica, Ray Charles, Pink Floyd, Nirvana and sometimes Slipknot (if I’m in the mood).

Name your favourite album(s) : Back in Black, Metallica’s Black album, Alice in Chains’ MTV Unplugged, Jar of Flies. Too many to mention.

Name a song that makes you hit “Repeat” when you listen to it : Of all the songs in the world it would have to be, believe it or not, Let There Be Love by Nat King Cole. One of the most timeless songs ever put onto any format whatsoever.

Name a song you can’t help singing along to : There are too many to pick from to be honest, so I can’t comment.

Favourite novelty song : I’m Alright by Kenny Loggins because I just think of that gopher in Caddyshack.

Favourite concert(s)/gig(s) : A band called The Manic Shine, when they played at Pivo Pivo a few years back. It was awesome. They came back to where some friends were staying and played a jam up until the wee small hours. I had to go home and get sleep, but it was awesome.

Which, if any, musical instruments can you play? : I can play the drums and I used to play other percussion instruments. Drums are still there though.

Can you sing? If so, what’s your Karaoke favourite? : I used to be able to, but my voice isn’t quite up to it anymore. Maybe it’ll come back eventually. I used to do Bohemian Rhapsody, but I’m more suited to anything from Barry White or Joe Cocker now.

What do you love about Irvine? : The good people. I worked there for 10 years and met some proper characters there and they have stayed in my head for a while, some of who I still keep in contact with.

Best view(point) in Irvine? : From the overpass in the shopping mall. It is actually a nice view of the town from there, provided you can see through the bird droppings. Failing that, anywhere at the Harbourside would do. Who doesn’t like the beach?

What’s your favourite breakfast? : Toast and porridge. I’m boring that way.

What’s your favourite dinner? : Steak Pie and potatoes

What’s your favourite soup? : Tomato, like the rest of the world (unless you have an allergy)

What’s your favourite ice-cream flavour? : Peanut Butter Ben and Jerry’s

What’s your favourite biscuit? : Digestives, plain or with a small bit of butter on them.

What’s your favourite fruit? : Bananas

What’s your favourite vegetable? : Peas or carrots

If it’s my round, what drink should I get you? : Either beer or Amoretto and either lemonade or cola with it.

If you have a day off and some cash in your pocket, what would you do? : Keep hold of it to go towards a night out at the pub or meet up with family and buy lunch.

When did you last have a lie-in? : Sunday morning, like Lionel Richie said.

What are the last three things you bought? : Water, orange juice and tea bags.

Best holiday ever? : Not saying.

Do you play any sport? : Badminton

Do you follow any sport/teams? : I follow football, but I’m not telling you who I support. I do enjoy most sport, other than horse racing and cricket. Dull things.

Do you have a hero? : I do, but I’m keeping it a secret.

Have you met anybody famous? : The Manic Shine. They’re not quite famous yet, but they will be.

Who was your favourite interviewee? : The Manic Shine, if they can count.

Who would you most like to interview? : Somebody famous. Not fussed who.

Do you have any secret talents? : Not really. I wish I did though.

Favourite film? : Shawshank Redemption

Favourite TV shows? : Gotham, as I’m really into it just now. Also Fast ‘n Loud on Discovery.

Favourite Book? : None, sadly.

Favourite game? : Destiny. Almost addicted.

Do you look like any celebrities? : Russel Crowe or James Corden, take your pick.
