5 Minute Interview with Robert Sommerville

How and why did you get involved with Irvine Beat FM? : Came to do an interview for another voluntary job I do, Macmillan Cancer Care about local services and here I am.

What are your favourite types of music? : Mowtown, soul and used to like rock when much younger

Name your favourite artist(s) : These days Paloma Faith, Jessie J, Beverley Knight, Gabrielle and Dina Carroll

Name a song that makes you hit “Repeat” when you listen to it. : At the moment it would have to be Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis or Fleur East with Sax

Name a song you can’t help singing along to : I can’t sing – but have been known to hum along to the tracks in the studio

Favourite concert(s)/gig(s) : Many at the old Glasgow Apollo but best would have been the 3 nights in a row I went to see Lynyrd Skynyrd in about 1976 not long before their plane crash which I believe was because it ran out of fuel – unforgivable mistake for any pilot to make!!

Which, if any, musical instruments can you play? : A CD player if it counts

Can you sing? If so, what’s your Karaoke favourite? : As previously stated can’t sing but have done a bit of karaoke to the Walkers Brothers You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling

What do you love about Irvine? : It is where I was born – well Buckreddan Kilwinning and I grew up here until the age of 21 when I went off on my aviation career but always loved to come back and see the view across to Arran especially at dusk – so much so we have had a local artist paint an oil of that scene.

Best view(point) in Irvine? : As above over to Arran at dusk

If someone visits Irvine for the first time, where MUST they go? : My cousin’s cafe Freckletons in the Mall or the beach park

What’s your favourite breakfast? : Sausages, bacon with beans on toast

What’s your favourite dinner? : Steak pie

What’s your favourite soup? : homemade lentil and bacon

What’s your favourite ice-cream flavour? : Rum and raisin

What’s your favourite biscuit? : Digestive

What’s your favourite fruit? : Banana – and I have the perfect holder to keep them from getting bruised if I take one for a packed lunch

What’s your favourite vegetable? : Peas

If it’s my round, what drink should I get you? : Tennents lager

If you have a day off and some cash in your pocket, what would you do? : Invest it – I am very careful with money and hate wasting it on frivolous things!

When did you last have a lie-in? : Monday

What are the last three things you bought? : Can’t remember it was so long ago since I bought anything

Best holiday ever? : Too many to mention but I like the States where we have an apartment in Myrtle Beach South Carolina

Best day out? : Last year we had a fantastic day out over in Arran

Do you play any sport? : Table tennis

Do you follow any sport/teams? : F1 but it is getting boring and Rangers

Do you have a hero? : No particular single person but I do admire what both my parents achieved locally – oh and my wife

Have you met anybody famous? : Yes many in my working days but if my wife reads this she will question the work bit as she used to think I just went out to have fun

Who was your favourite interviewee? : All of our guests that come into Irvine Beat FM are very special – but I was once interviewed by the American chat show host Jay Leno at an airshow.

Do you have any secret talents? : Yes I can touch my head with my foot!!

Favourite film? : Don’t watch many films as my attention span is about 45 minutes

Favourite TV shows? : Scot Squad – that was so funny

Favourite Book? : Which magazine

Favourite game? : Scrabble

Do you look like any celebrities? : What’s a celebrity?
